Full Patient Criteria
Are Our Services Right For You?
At Psychiatry Online Canada, we offer virtual comprehensive psychiatric consultation assessments with limited follow-up sessions for residents in British Columbia and Nova Scotia. This is a one-time consultation service supporting Family Doctors, Pediatricians or Nurse Practitioners who will maintain ongoing responsibility for mental health care for you long term. The following criteria will help you determine if our services are suitable for your situation and can meet the requirements for proper care.
Psychiatry Online Canada Service Suitability Criteria
We are unable to see patients who have serious safety concerns or mental health illness (e.g. suicidal or homicidal with plans and intent, recent serious suicide attempts, psychotic illness and Bipolar I disorder). This is because we are private solo practitioners without a treatment team and providing our services online. These patients will need appropriate care in a mental health team setting in-person.
The reason for assessment is one of the following: 1) Need for timely new diagnoses, 2) clarification of existing diagnoses, or 3) second opinions for medications and psychotherapy recommendations. There is only a short wait list for our service compared to waiting for up to 2 years in a provincial funded care setting.
We can only offer limited follow-up treatment sessions at this time (up to three 45min sessions over a 3-month period) due to the very high demand for our services. If we provide prescriptions during this period, your primary care physician must take over this care after the follow-up treatment sessions are finished
The referral is for a patient who is at least 5 years old, with mild to moderate mental health illness.
Patients under 18 years old must have an adult family member present for at least part of the appointment to provide important collateral information.
Our service is a concierge, fully online service. The fees are fully out of pocket and not covered by any provincial health ministries.
We are only accepting patients who are able and willing to be seen virtually.
We are experienced in the evaluation and treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD and PTSD, as well as more complex diagnoses such as high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder.
Patients must have their own family physicians, pediatricians, or nurse practitioners in order to follow through with treatment care recommendations and to provide prescriptions. Those without one must have a physician at an urgent care facility willing to help with treatment recommendations.
Assessment reports will include diagnoses as well as detailed treatment recommendations and medication titration protocols to simplify follow-up care for referring physicians and nurse practitioners.
Except in rare cases, we will not be providing any prescriptions for patients. We will provide our medication recommendations, if any, to your follow-up primary care physician.
Patients will need to fill out a screening form to determine eligibility for our service.
